Day 24: Favorite Parent

This one is difficult for me because there’s aspects of each parent that I really like.

For example, Aurora’s parents are willing to let her go to save her life. It can’t be easy giving up a baby to three kooky fairies and not knowing how your beloved daughter is growing up.

I really like King Triton’s willingness to bend the rules once he discovers how making Ariel a human will make her so happy.

I love Maurice’s eternal love for Belle and refusal to accept that she’s ‘odd’.

I love that the Sultan wants what is best for Jasmine and allows her to marry a commoner.

Chief Powhatan is a very strong and determined leader but also is good at making allies, and he won’t back down from a fight until Pocahontas literally throws her body in front of John’s.

I love that Mulan’s father is willing to go back to war to save his family. He may be crippled but he still walks tall.

I’m actually not a huge fan of Tiana’s parents, mostly because her dad kind of misguides her about wishing on stars and hard work, and her mother doesn’t fully support her dream from the start, and to be honest I’m still trying to ‘get’ the message of The Princess and the Frog.

But to be honest, I think I like Rapunzel’s parents best. They don’t talk in the entire film, but you can tell the depth of love they have for each other and their missing daughter. The scenes are small and so are the details, but I love every scene they are in. Especially when they are getting ready to light the lanterns, and the king cries a single tear, man that scene always sets me off. They never gave up hope, they didn’t try to replace Rapunzel with another heir, they are just good, dedicated people and beloved by their kingdom.

I'm allowed to be sad at this point!

Day 23: Favorite DanCe Scene

How can I pick anything other than the super iconic ballroom scene from Beauty and the Beast?

They won Best Original Song for it!

It was one of the first films to seamlessly integrate 3D and hand drawn animations!

It was SUPER ROMANTIC.

Yellow was such an unconventional colour for Belle’s dress, and the way it moved was just gorgeous. It was inspiration for my own wedding dress.

Beast looked TOTALLY HANDSOME in his suit.

Let’s look at it in GIF format:

Day 22: Bravest Princess

I can only come up with a draw for whom I think the two bravest Disney Princesses are, and I hope once you see my arguments for both of them you might agree.

The first bravest princess I nominate is Belle, and here’s why:

belle-brave

  • She went out looking for her missing father by herself in the middle of winter.
  • She offered to take Maurice’s place as prisoner after seeing the horrible way the Beast treated him, and expected to stay in the dungeon.
  • She explores the West Wing, even though she’s been told it’s off limits.
  • She goes back to the castle to tend to Beast’s wounds, even though she could have left him to die in the forest and even though he’d done nothing but yell at and terrify her.
  • She had the courage to look beyond his scary exterior and find the gentleman beneath.
  • She was brave enough to leave Beast when her father needed her most.
  • She stands up to Gaston, whom no one else in the village has the balls to call out.
  • She said “I love you” first, not knowing it would change everything.

The second bravest princess I nominate is Rapunzel, and here’s why:

rapunzel

  • She has been raised to be afraid of the outside world, yet she still leaves her safe tower armed with nothing but a frying pan.
  • She leaves her tower even though she knows it will hurt the only person she thinks cares about her, Mother Gothel.
  • She places herself in front of a raging horse and manages to calm him down.
  • She fights the ruffians for Flynn’s freedom using only her frying pan.
  • She trusts Flynn with her secret even though she barely knows him.
  • She is brave enough to trust Flynn when he goes to return the crown.
  • She confronts her ‘mother’ when she figures out the truth of being the lost princess.
  • She fights and fights Mother Gothel but promises to go with her if she can save Flynn.

So what do you think? Who’s the bravest out of Belle and Rapunzel? I just can’t choose.

Unconventional Tools for Writing: DollDivine Dressmaker

dolldivine

I’ve used DollDivine before to recreate the Disney Princesses in my blog series studying the Disney Princesses. It was fun to recreate the iconic outfits as best I could with the limited designs offered.

In my writing, I often skip over what a person is wearing. I love clothing descriptions in the literature I read, but I tend to just see faces when I’m writing, and I forget to describe what a character is wearing.

DollDivine is one of my favourite procrastination destinations because it can be useful as well. See, all these pretty clothes I design, well, maybe my characters can wear them! And then when I’m struggling to describe what my characters are wearing, I have a visual reference right in front of me!

Yes, Tally’s face is different in all the dolls and no, I don’t know why I gave her a wolf in the second one. Maybe it’s Ash?

I find the combined fun of working on the outfits and then being able to describe them really help me in my writing!

Are there any unconventional tools you use to help with your writing?

Day 21: Favourite Quote

“Love is putting someone else’s needs before yours.”

true-love

This quote was very powerful for me because shortly after I heard it, I got married and my husband sought treatment for his myriad of mental illnesses. I became his carer, and I learned to put his needs before my own…

Most of the time. I’m still learning. I’m finding the balance between his needs coming first and the ultimate need to look after myself, because if I crash and burn there’s no one left to care for him.

But it’s this quote (combined with Taylor Swift’s ‘Out of the Woods’) that gets me through the hard times.

anna-ice-statue

And I think it means a lot coming from the true love of a sister. How many people expected Anna to give up her chance at true love’s kiss curing her and leap in front of Hans’ sword? The very act that left her frozen was the act that set her free. There’s a certain beauty in that.

Yes, I missed Disney Wednesday again. What can I say? I’m fairly busy at the moment what with my #supersekritproject and NaNoWriMo coming up and just work and life in general.

Although I am pleased to announce that AFTER NaNoWriMo this year, I’ll be announcing my #supersekritproject and I hope you love it as much as I do!

“Love mean putting someone else’s needs before your own.” “Love mean putting someone else’s needs before your own.” Very powerful for me because shortly after this I got married and my husband sought treatment for his bi-polar depression, anxiety and PTSD, and I became his carer.
