TERMS:

Winter witch: a person born with the ability to summon and control ice, and can kill just by touching a person’s skin.
Summer witch: a person born with the ability to summon and control fire, and can heal others by touching their skin.
Shell: Walking corpse, unable to think for themselves.
Revenant: Someone revived by a bone witch, full thinking and breathing, as if they had never been dead.
“By the fires!”: this is an exclamation, the equivalent of “oh my god!”
“Deepest winter.“: this is an exclamation, used in the place of some cursing.
Ishma: old Highlander word for witch.

Other types of witches (SPOILERS)

Lich/bone witch: a winter witch who can also use summer witch magic, and can raise the dead into either walking shells, or fully thinking, breathing revenants. Lich is the old word for bone witch, and the gang don’t discover and start using the term bone witch until Book 2.
Spring witch: a person born with the ability to summon and control earth, and can mix magic into potions for external benefits such as a fast-healing salve.
Autumn witch: a person born with the ability to summon and control air.

The Kingdom of Atlantica, and its capital city Thetis. The royal residence is the Summer Palace.
The Country of the Highlands, and its capital city Grimhold. The royal residence is Blackstone Citadel (formerly Kingscrag).
Other locations:
- Fort Norwich, the town where Tally was born.
- Bridget, the town where Tally was found and taken to the Summer Palace.

SPOILERS FOR BOOK 2 ONWARDS

The Queendom of the Midlenes, and its capital city Tolbridge. The royal residence is The Roundhouse.
The Kingdom of the Autumn Court, and its capital city, Dominion. The royal residence is The Autumn Estate.
The Territory of Winterhaven, and its capital Frostbarren. The royal residence is The Crystal Hall.

Nataliya “Tally” Wolfsbane: bone witch, a mix of winter and summer witches, with bonus necromancy.
Ash: Tally’s shapeshifting companion. Their first meeting is detailed in Winter Wildling, though Ash’s actual origins remain a mystery for much of the series.
Ford Tarasen: Crown Prince of Atlantica.
Lennox “Knox” Novak: Ford’s cousin on his father’s side, and a Lord. Ford’s closest friend, advisor, and body double.
Dover Saengo: Ford’s cousin on his mother’s side. Older brother of Beck. Close friends with Ford.
Beckett “Beck” Saengo: Ford’s cousin on his mother’s side, younger brother of Dover. Close friends with Ford.
Marina Baran: Tally’s handmaiden turned close friend.
Calder Tarasen: King of Atlantica, Ford and Bourne’s father.
Nerissa Tarasen: Queen of Atlantica, Ford and Bourne’s mother.
Bourne Tarasen: Ford’s younger brother.
Demyan: Bourne’s advisor.
Vera: Calder’s senior adviser.
