Wattpad

Wattpad is an awesome website where you can upload your own content for free reading. It’s the home of fanfiction and indie writers. It’s aimed at mobile users – people with smart phones, etc – but anyone can join and read free books and works in progress (WIP). I joined a few weeks ago and yesterday I posted my first story.

The Archive of Lost Dreams is available on Wattpad. I’ll be slowly uploading all of my content on to Wattpad: that means all the Storm Front stories and a serialised version of The Edge of Darkness.

I’m toying with the idea of keeping a WIP on there as well, and updating it as I write it, but I don’t write linearly (as much as I try to) and as much as writing is a hobby for me, I am trying to treat it like a job. I’m going back and filling in empty places in The Oncoming Storm (working title) and I wouldn’t feel comfortable putting a first draft up on the website, anyway.

It might be an idea for the future, though, especially as I am going to attempt to use Camp NanoWriMo as extra motivation to get some more novels done this year.

I’d like to know your opinion: would you like to read a work in progress, or would you prefer I serialise a completed, edited and polished novel? Would you like to see how I work, or would you rather wait for the final product?

    Thanks for pointing out Wattpad. I’d never heard of it – but it sounds like a great site.

    Personally, I would shy away from posting WIPs. It’s like going on a date with bed head, not brushing your teeth and wearing sweatpants in the nice restaurant. I think, like any profession, you should always put your best foot forward. I do believe, however, in using sites like ‘scribophile’ to have other writers give you free reviews of your work. Not every thing a critiquer points out needs to be changed, but if one or two (or ten) tell you the same thing, then you know there’s a problem.

    I love serialized stories, though. I’m trying it myself. Looking forward to reading your work.

    Oh, I’m a member of that site! 8D It’s pretty decent, and it has tons of cool features that make it easy to use. However, it’s mainly directed towards eleven to eighteen-year-olds, so unless you’re posting a Romance, Teen Fiction, and/or Vampire category it’s unlikely that it’ll be garnered much attention. The air there is REALLY laid-back–like some of the books in the Hot page need some editing. In my opinion, it’s mainly for gaining readers if you’re under those three categories. If not, I suggest trying out Figment, a similar site except it’s run by Harper Collins. I haven’t used my account much there, but from what I’ve seen so far, it’s mainly teenagers. They also have fairer swap policies (swap meaning that they’ll read and comment/review on your story if you do the same on theirs) compared to Wattpad, because I’ve heard that some people do click-for-clicks or something like that, which is basically trading views so that their work can get pushed to the top. Another good thing about Figment is that there’s a 2000 characters limit and Figment has none. I guess it depends what you really want though.

    WIPs posted are okay, but posting it entirely has some advantages. If you upload a chapter the minute you finish it, you can actually see the reader’s reaction and take some time to edit it a bit and mull the story over. However, it’s a lot less stressful to be finished with your works. You won’t have to start hating yourself for procrastinating when you’re supposed to be editing up the next part. xD
